Drug driver jailed for eight years after killing 16-year-old cyclist while speeding at over twice the limit.

Speeding Drug Driver Kills Teen Cyclist

Ryan Elsender, 29, slammed into 16-year-old Jayden McGuinness on Walker Road, Newcastle, on 27 September 2024. Elsender was racing at more than 70mph in a 30mph zone and had cocaine and cannabis in his system. Jayden suffered fatal injuries and died two days later in hospital.

Elsender fled the scene but returned shortly and called the police.

Reckless Driving & Drugs Behind Crash

Police investigations by Northumbria’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit revealed Elsender was well over the legal cannabis limit and also had cocaine in his blood at the time of the crash.

At Newcastle Crown Court, Elsender pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and another charge of dangerous driving. He was sentenced to eight years in prison and banned from driving for 15 years and six months.

Heartbroken Family Speak Out

“Jayden was just lush. He had a heart of gold and was always thinking of how to be a loving and fun brother and cousin,” said Jayden’s grandfather, Brian White.

“I have to pass the place every day, and it’s a constant reminder of how we lost Jayden. The total disregard for his life is unforgivable and should never have happened.”

Police Warn: Dangerous Drivers Will Be Prosecuted

“Jayden’s family has shown incredible strength,” said Sgt John Sanderson of Northumbria Police. “We hope they find some closure knowing the person responsible has been brought to justice.”

“Ryan Elsender’s reckless actions claimed a young life. If you use drugs and drive dangerously, expect prison if your actions end in death.”

The judge’s driving ban means Elsender won’t be back on the roads for over two decades.
