Outrage as Murderer of PC Frank Mason Set Free
The release of James Hurley, who killed off-duty Hertfordshire Police officer PC Frank Mason during a 1988 armed robbery, has sparked fury across the police force and local community.
Convicted Killer Freed After 35 Years Behind Bars
Hurley was locked up for life in 1989 for the murder in Hemel Hempstead. He escaped custody during a prison transfer in 1994 and was on the run for 13 years. Police finally captured him amid a drug raid in the Netherlands in 2007.
Despite his grim history, the Parole Board approved Hurley’s release in October, triggering shockwaves among police officers nationwide.
Police Federation Slams Decision as ‘Betrayal’
Luke Mitchell, Chair of Hertfordshire Police Federation, blasted the move:
“We are shocked, disgusted and in disbelief to hear that Hurley has been released from prison. It is absolutely unpalatable, and I know this news will send shockwaves through all officers — not just in Hertfordshire, but across the country, both serving and retired.”
Mitchell slammed the justice system, calling the release a “mockery” given Hurley’s escape and long evasion of justice.
“What Hurley did is unforgivable. This man murdered an off-duty police officer. What message does this send to the policing family? What message does this send to Frank’s family? This is the ultimate betrayal,” Mitchell added.
Honouring PC Frank Mason’s Legacy
PC Mason’s heroism lives on through the Frank Mason Memorial Award, given annually to officers showing exceptional courage and dedication.
Mitchell concluded:
“As we digest this news, our thoughts are with the family of Frank, especially his wife, Jill. Frank’s heroism, bravery and courage will never be forgotten.”
Calls Mount for Tougher Sentencing for Police Killers
The Parole Board’s controversial decision has ramped up demands for stricter policies on releasing convicted police killers. Many say justice has not been served.
