A German shepherd named Athena is missing after fleeing the scene of a motorway crash on the M1 that tragically killed another family dog, police have confirmed.
The incident occurred at around 6.45pm on Saturday, 15 March, near junction 33 of the M1 in South Yorkshire, when a vehicle carrying three dogs was involved in a collision with another car.
Tragically, a springer spaniel died at the scene, while a Staffordshire bull terrier remained inside the car. However, Athena, the German shepherd, escaped the vehicle and ran off, prompting an urgent search.
Police and Owners Continue Search for Athena
South Yorkshire Police have launched a public appeal to help locate Athena, urging residents in the area to remain vigilant and report any sightings.
A police spokesperson said:
“Officers carried out searches of the area, and enquiries with partners, but we, and the owners, have still sadly been unable to find the dog.
We’re urging our communities to be vigilant and if you see a German shepherd that you believe could be Athena, please get in touch.”
Athena’s disappearance has added further heartbreak for the family already grieving the loss of their springer spaniel.
Driver Arrested
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, a 40-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of failing to provide a specimen for analysis and careless driving. He is due to appear at Sheffield Magistrates’ Court today (Monday 17 March).
Appeal to the Public
Local residents, dog walkers, and motorists are being asked to keep an eye out for Athena, who may be frightened and disoriented after the traumatic incident.
