Former Coronation Street actor John Saint Ryan has died at the age of 72 after suffering a heart attack. The news was shared by his wife, Joyce, who expressed her heartbreak and paid tribute to her late husband’s life and legacy.
Family Statement
In a statement posted on social media, Joyce said:
“I and our family want to let our friends know that John had a heart attack the evening of Thursday 3rd of April. We were with him at the hospital where the staff did everything possible, but unfortunately, he did not survive. We are absolutely heartbroken.”
She added that John Saint Ryan had chosen to donate his body to medical research, so there will not be a funeral. The family plans to hold a celebration of his life at a later date.
“We are all fortunate to have known and loved this special ‘Gentleman’ as he has been described to me numerous times over the last couple of days,” Joyce concluded.
A Storied Career
John Saint Ryan, born in Burnley, Lancashire in 1953, initially pursued a career as a martial arts teacher before transitioning into acting. His first role came as a stunt double for Sean Connery in the film The Medicine Man, followed by his acting debut in Channel 4’s G.B.H. in 1983.
He later appeared in Emmerdale before landing his most notable role in Coronation Street as Charlie Whelan, a long-distance lorry driver, from 1993 to 1994. In the ITV soap, his character began a relationship with iconic Rovers Return landlady Bet Gilroy (played by Julie Goodyear) during her separation from husband Alec Gilroy (Roy Barraclough).
However, the storyline took a twist when barmaid Tanya Pooley (Eva Pope) pursued Charlie, leading them to run off to Germany together, only for Tanya to dump Charlie after he had served his purpose. This marked the end of his character’s journey on Coronation Street.
Hollywood and Life in California
After his time on Coronation Street, John Saint Ryan moved to California, where he made guest appearances in several American TV shows, including Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Babylon 5, Gargoyles, and L.A. Heat. He also appeared in several independent films.
Passion for Horses
Beyond his acting career, John was passionate about horse training. He owned and operated the Red Rose Ranch in California, where he specialized in the doma vaquera style of riding. An accomplished rider, he won multiple national and international titles in the sport, training both horses and riders in dressage and western riding.
