A vulnerable 20-year-old dog named Tilly, who was stolen in broad daylight from a Croydon estate, has been located thanks to the heroic efforts of a local businessman and a public outcry that spread rapidly online.
Tilly, a Jack Russell-Chihuahua cross, was taken on Monday, 14 April, by a group of five youths from the green area between Oakbank and Field Way, New Addington The theft left her elderly owner, Bob, distraught and desperate for help, fearing for Tilly’s survival without her vital heart and seizure medications.
“If they dump her, she can’t see or hear or even walk much—and in this cold, she don’t stand a chance,” Bob said, heartbroken.
“I have her medication here. Her life is literally on the line.” ?
Reward Sparks Breakthrough
The turning point in the search came when local businessman Charles May offered a cash reward to anyone who could provide information leading to Tilly’s safe return. His generosity and determination helped generate fresh leads, ultimately leading him to locate Tilly.
“It’s very sad it took money to be offered to get information about where she was—especially when time was critical and her health was deteriorating,” said a family friend.
“But Charles May is a hero. He stepped up when it mattered most.”
Tilly was found in poor condition, but alive, and is now being returned to Bob. Her current medical state is serious, and the focus now turns to giving her urgent care and hoping for recovery.
“We pray Tilly will be OK,” read a message from volunteers helping with her recovery. “Thank you all for raising awareness. It truly made a difference.” ?❤️?
Ongoing Police Investigation
The Met Police are continuing to investigate the theft. CCTV footage and photographs of the suspects have been secured, and the incident is being treated as theft of a vulnerable animal. Anyone with further information is urged to come forward.
