CCTV tracks killer’s escape to Herne Bay
The drama unfolded in a courtyard off Canterbury High Street just before midnight on October 10. After the violent scuffle, Hgar and another man fled the scene. CCTV footage caught them leaving the city centre and heading to Herne Bay by taxi. Police arrested Hgar around 5am after spotting him trying to change clothes in a bid to dodge capture.
From murder to manslaughter plea
Originally charged with murder, Hgar pleaded guilty to manslaughter on grounds of excessive self-defence at Canterbury Crown Court. He faces sentencing later this year. Meanwhile, a second man initially charged with murder was cleared due to lack of evidence.
Police comment on fatal stabbing
“This case illustrates the fatal consequences of arming yourself with a knife during a dispute. A man has lost his life and another is facing a lengthy term in prison. I am pleased we were quickly able to identify the perpetrator of this terrible offence, who has now been brought to justice.” – Detective Inspector Colin McKeen
The sentencing date for Mohammed Nour Hgar is yet to be confirmed.
