Hit-and-Run Horror in Erdington: Reckless Driver Jailed for Three Years
Speed Demon Smashes into Teen, Then Flees
Mervyn Boreland, 49, blasted down Holly Lane in Erdington at a shocking 67mph—more than double the 30mph speed limit. At around 5:20pm on Saturday, 27 May 2023, he struck a 13-year-old girl, seriously injuring her before fleeing the scene without a backward glance.
Teen’s Life Shattered in Instant
The schoolgirl was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite surviving, her family say her life will never be the same. She faces a brutal fight just to relearn the basics: talking, walking, eating, and swallowing.
“Our perfect family life changed forever that day. Watching our child struggle every day just to do the bare minimum is heartbreaking. She is our inspiration.”
Police Hunt Leads to Arrest
West Midlands Police launched an immediate investigation, scouring CCTV and appealing for witnesses. Their efforts tracked a black Volkswagen Golf connected to the hit-and-run. Boreland eventually handed himself in and was arrested.
He pleaded guilty to causing serious injury by dangerous driving and was sentenced last Thursday, 1 May, at Birmingham Crown Court to three years behind bars.
Police Warn Against Reckless Driving
A West Midlands Police spokesperson said:
“This case is a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of reckless driving. We are grateful for the public’s help in bringing this offender to justice.”
