Close Call on Elgin Oil Platform as Helicopter Blade Snaps Mid-Storm
An oil rig worker faced a terrifying near-miss when a helicopter blade snapped inches away during fierce 60mph winds on the Elgin Oil Platform, located 135 nautical miles east of Aberdeen.
Blade Breaks During Storm Otto Landing
On February 17, 2023, amid Storm Otto’s brutal gusts, an Airbus H175 helicopter had just touched down when disaster struck. A new report from the Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) reveals a critical mechanical failure in the rotor brake system triggered the dangerous incident.
After dropping off six passengers, engineers spotted a cockpit warning and advised shutting the helicopter down. But the rotor brake failed to fully stop the blades, which kept turning slowly, despite tie-down efforts by the commander and helideck crew.
Hair-raising Moment on the Helideck
Suddenly, one rotor blade snapped near its root, swung up vertically and missed a crew member by inches as he tried to secure the last strap. The shattered blade briefly rotated before detaching and plummeting into the sea. Three more blades also broke off during the chaos.
Significant Aircraft Damage Uncovered
- Cracked and punctured pilot’s left window
- Emergency door handle ripped off
- Multiple impact marks on the helicopter’s structure
The investigation highlighted a build-up of organic material in the braking system, which caused one rotor brake pad to seize. Ground crew noted issues while towing the chopper at Aberdeen airport but failed to pass this information to engineers. The helicopter was then cleared for flight.
Flawed Helipad Design Made Things Worse
AAIB detectives also pointed the finger at the helipad’s design. Built atop an accommodation block, the helipad created a “cliff edge” wind effect, amplifying vertical wind speeds. Though within operational limits, these gusts pushed the rotating blades to snap under pressure.
AAIB Demands Safety Overhaul
The AAIB has slapped down six vital safety calls, including:
- Upgrading wind measurement systems on rig helipads
- Overhauling Airbus EC175 rotor brake maintenance
- Better communication protocols to report in-flight technical faults before departure
This chilling brush with disaster highlights the razor-thin line between safety and catastrophe in offshore aviation—especially when storms are raging.
