Three Senior Countess of Chester Hospital Chiefs Arrested Over Baby Death Scandal
Three top figures from the Countess of Chester Hospital leadership team have been arrested on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter. The crackdown is part of a police probe into how the hospital handled a series of unexplained infant deaths during serial killer nurse Lucy Letby’s reign of terror.
Arrests Linked to Letby’s Deadly 2015-16 Neonatal Spree
The arrests, swooping in on Monday, June 30, target senior staff active between 2015 and 2016 — when Letby murdered seven babies and tried to kill seven more on the hospital’s neonatal ward. Cheshire Police confirmed these moves are part of Operation Duet, a major criminal probe launched in October 2023 following Letby’s conviction.
The investigation broadened in 2025 to include gross negligence manslaughter alongside the original corporate manslaughter focus.
“Focus Is on Decision-Making Failures,” Says Lead Detective
Detective Superintendent Paul Hughes, heading the inquiry, said: “This investigation is examining decisions taken at the highest level at the Countess of Chester Hospital during a time of increased fatalities. These arrests relate to the potential grossly negligent action—or inaction—of individuals in senior leadership.”
All three arrested have been released on bail while police continue their enquiries. Their identities have not been made public.
DS Hughes added: “It is important to note that these arrests do not impact Lucy Letby’s convictions, which remain in place for the murder and attempted murder of multiple babies. This is a separate and parallel investigation.”
Probe Into Infant Deaths Remains Live at Two Hospitals
Police are investigating further baby deaths and unexplained collapses at both Countess of Chester Hospital and 1 Women’s Hospital from 2012 to 2016. Letby, 35, was convicted in August 2023 and handed a whole-life sentence for one of the UK’s most infamous serial child murder sprees.
