Tragic Death of 80-Year-Old in Birmingham Taxi Crash – Police Seek Crucial Witnesses
Police have launched an urgent appeal after an 80-year-old man died following a collision with a taxi in Handsworth, Birmingham.
Man Hit While Sitting by Church Wall
The tragic incident unfolded around 5:25pm on Wednesday, 2 July, on St James Road. The elderly victim was sitting on a wall outside a church when he was struck by a grey or silver Volkswagen Touran taxi attempting a U-turn.
He suffered severe leg injuries and was rushed to hospital. Sadly, his condition worsened, and he passed away two days later, on Friday, 4 July.
Police Hunt for Second Vehicle and Dashcam Footage
West Midlands Police confirmed the taxi driver is cooperating with the investigation and said they are supporting the victim’s family during this heartbreaking time.
“We would appeal for witnesses or anyone who may have any dashcam footage of the incident to come forward,” said Sergeant Richard Evans from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
“We particularly want to trace the owner of a second vehicle that pulled into St James Road and may have seen the taxi – a grey, silver VW Touran – making the U-turn.”
