Man Jailed for 28 Years After Brutal Dumbbell Beating Left Victim for Dead
Ferocious Attack in Derby Leaves Victim Fighting for Life
A 27-year-old man has been locked up for 28 years after launching a savage assault on a former friend. Abdusalam Hassan battered his victim with a metal dumbbell bar, hammering his head 31 times on Burton Road, Derby. The victim was left battered and bleeding, lying in the street as cars swerved dangerously to avoid hitting him.
Victim Suffers Life-Threatening Injuries and Lifelong Damage
Emergency services rushed the critically injured man to hospital where he was treated for life-threatening brain injuries. At Chesterfield Magistrates’ Court, the judge revealed the victim now faces a lifetime of pain and severe cognitive damage. The victim will require round-the-clock care.
- Severe brain injuries
- Permanent disabilities and mobility problems
- Chronic pain and significant memory loss
- Emotional and psychological trauma
The victim’s family spoke of their heartbreak, stating, “This attack has not only destroyed his life, but shattered our family’s future.”
Judge Condemns Attack as “Brutal, Callous, and Devastating”
The presiding judge slammed Hassan’s actions as “a sustained and ferocious act of violence, driven by personal animosity, and executed without mercy.” The court heard how Hassan left the victim to die in the road.
Denied Attempted Murder but Jury Unanimous
Despite Hassan’s denial of attempted murder, claiming no intent to kill, the jury saw through his lies. Forensic evidence and CCTV footage sealed his fate with a unanimous conviction.
Justice Served with Tough Prison Sentence
Hassan faces 28 years behind bars plus an extended licence period to keep the public safe when he’s released. Derbyshire Police praised the sentence as a clear warning against extreme violence.
“This was one of the most violent assaults we’ve encountered in recent years,” said a police spokesperson. “Our thoughts remain with the victim and his family, who have shown immense courage throughout this process.”
