Heartbreaking: 1-Year-Old Girl Dies After Brutal Assault in Newport
Tragedy Strikes After Serious Assault
A 1-year-old girl has sadly died following a horrific assault in Newport. The toddler was rushed to St Mary’s Hospital early on Friday before being airlifted to Southampton General Hospital by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance for specialist care. Despite doctors’ best efforts, her injuries were too severe, and she passed away this afternoon.
Adoptive Parents Arrested and Released on Bail
Concerns raised by hospital staff sparked an urgent police investigation. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary arrested a 31-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman from Dairy Crest Drive, Newport, on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent. The pair, who are the girl’s adoptive parents, were detained around 12 hours after emergency services were called.
Both have since been released on conditional bail until 1 November 2025, as inquiries continue. Police are now preparing to upgrade the probe to a murder investigation.
Police Urge Public to Stop Spreading Rumours
