Two British Tourists Die in Lisbon Tram Horror as Investigation Ramps Up
Two Brits are among the 16 dead after a devastating tram crash in Lisbon shocked the world. The historic 150-year-old Gloria funicular snapped from its cable and hurtled downhill before smashing into a hotel, leaving a scene of chaos and carnage.
Who Are the British Victims?
- Kayleigh Smith, 36, from Macclesfield, Cheshire
- Will Nelson, 44, lecturer at Manchester’s Arden School of Theatre
The couple had only just arrived in Lisbon for a holiday when the disaster struck. They died alongside Portuguese locals and tourists from South Korea, Canada, Switzerland, Ukraine, France, and the USA.
A third British victim, an 82-year-old man, remains unnamed. Confusion surrounded the casualty list after a German man thought dead was found alive in hospital.
Disaster Details: Tram Racing Out of Control
The iconic funicular lost control on its steep run from Bairro Alto to Restauradores Square. Eye-witnesses said the tram was “racing downhill at full speed” before crashing into a hotel.
Initial investigations suggest a snapped cable may be the cause, with brake failure and maintenance checks under scrutiny. The cable was reportedly due for replacement in 263 days and the tram had passed inspection the morning of the crash.
Carris, the operator, and Portuguese authorities are leading the inquiry while the country mourns the tragedy with three days of official national mourning.
Pedro Bogas, president of Carris: “If it had originated from something very obvious, we would already have identified it.”
Aftermath and Reactions
Emergency teams worked through the night freeing trapped passengers and tending to 22 survivors. Authorities confirmed no Britons remain hospitalised.
UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer expressed being “deeply saddened” by the loss of British lives. Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro vowed a full investigation.
Families of the victims are preparing compensation claims, with reports suggesting payouts could reach up to £85,000 per relative.
Scene of Devastation
The tram was found mangled on its side, with tracks torn up and dust clouding the steep street. Onlookers screamed as emergency crews worked to rescue children believed trapped beneath the wreckage.
This horrific incident has left Lisbon and the UK reeling, mourning the sudden and tragic loss of life.
