Inferno Erupts at Isle of Wight Flats in Newport
A fierce fire tore through a block of flats in Newport this afternoon, sending smoke billowing and sparking bus route diversions.
Blaze Breaks Out Just After 4pm
Shortly after 4pm on Wednesday 28th, flames broke out on West Street, Newport. Six fire engines and an aerial ladder raced to the scene as shoppers and residents raised the alarm. Firefighters battled as the building’s roof was engulfed in flames and thick smoke poured skywards.
Fire Crews From Across the Isle Join the Fight
- Firefighters from Newport, Cowes, Ryde, and East Cowes united to tackle the blaze.
- Southern Vectis immediately diverted buses on routes 7 and 38 to keep passengers safe.
- A fire service spokeswoman warned crews would be at the scene for some time.
“We were called just after 4pm to a property fire on West Street. The roof is well alight, and crews are expected to remain for some time,” said the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue spokeswoman.
No Injuries Reported But Cause Still Unknown
Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far. The fire’s cause remains under investigation, but early signs point to an electrical fault.
