Major Weekend Roadworks Hit Portsmouth’s Eastern Road Bridge – Plan Your Journey!

Heads up, Portsmouth drivers! Eastern Road will be hit by major closures this weekend as essential repairs take place on the water bridge. Avoid the area from Friday 14 October to Monday 17 October to dodge gridlock.

Full Southbound Closure & Lane Restrictions

  • Southbound shut: 9pm Fri 14 Oct – 6am Sat 15 Oct
  • Again from 4pm Sat 15 Oct – no later than 5am Mon 17 Oct
  • Northbound traffic: Reduced to one lane during closures
  • Rest of weekend: Southbound restricted to one lane

Fully signed diversions will be in place for drivers and pedestrians. But if you can, steer clear of Eastern Road altogether and take alternative routes, especially the 1.

Why the Hassle? Essential Bridge Repairs

The work involves replacing the bridge joints to keep the structure safe and sound. Normally, repairs happen overnight, but the new joints and road surface need time to set, so crews will be working solidly over the whole weekend.

Authorities picked this weekend carefully—avoiding major events, school holidays, and Portsmouth FC matches—to minimise disruption. Still, expect delays and plan ahead.

More Than Just Bridge Repairs

To cut future closures, contractors will also tackle street lighting maintenance and drain cleansing while the road is closed. A two-in-one job to save Portsmouth motorists headaches down the line.

“We apologise for any disruption this may cause and thank everyone for their patience and cooperation,” said Colas, the firm handling the work.

So, Portsmouth, stay alert, plan your routes, and avoid Eastern Road this weekend unless you fancy a crawl!
