Fire Crews Rush to WestQuay Shopping Centre After Sparks Seen in Ceiling
Firefighters swarmed WestQuay Shopping Centre in Southampton this afternoon after sparks and smoke were spotted inside a food outlet. Crews from across the city scrambled to the multi-million-pound retail hub to tackle the blaze and keep shoppers safe.
Firefighters on High Alert
- Retained crews from Botley stood by at Hightown to cover the city while the main response teams were at WestQuay.
- Two pumps from St Mary’s station support crews were also called in to tackle the incident.
Sparks and Smoke Trigger Emergency Response
Just after 4pm on Tuesday, two fire crews rushed to the food court area after reports of sparks and smoke coming through the ceiling. Eyewitnesses saw ash falling, sparking alarm among shoppers and staff.
Inspection Finds No Further Danger
A Hampshire Fire spokesman said: “Two crews were sent just after 4pm after reports of sparks and smoke seen through the ceiling at Southampton’s shopping centre. An inspection was carried out but no further action was needed. The crews left just after 4.30pm.”
The quick response ensured the situation was swiftly contained, with no injuries or major damage reported. WestQuay remained open, much to the relief of shoppers and retailers alike.
