Hampshire Fire Hero Jerry Leonard Honoured by The Queen After 45 Years on the Frontline
A Hampshire fire commander has been crowned with the Queen’s Fire Service Medal after an incredible 45 years dedicated to saving lives and keeping the public safe.
Family Legacy of Firefighting
Jerry Leonard, Group Manager for Winchester and Test Valley, kicked off his fire career at just 17, following the path of his father and grandfather. The Leonard family has clocked up over a century of service combined, with Jerry’s wife Ingrid also a key player—serving as a group manager in Control for 27 years with Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service.
“I am incredibly delighted to have been chosen to receive a Queen’s Fire Service Medal,” Jerry said. “I am humbled to receive such an honour for a job I love and have enjoyed every minute of the past 45 years.”
From On-Call Firefighter to Global Rescue Veteran
Starting as an on-call firefighter in 1974 – the year the minimum joining age dropped from 18 to 17 – Jerry’s career is packed with achievements. He helped found UK Search and Rescue (UKSAR), now known as UK International Search and Rescue (UK ISAR). He’s been deployed to disaster zones worldwide, including Armenia, Turkey, Indonesia, and Nepal.
Beyond the frontline, Jerry wears many hats: national Urban Search and Rescue tactical advisor, National Hazardous Material Advisor, and National Inter-agency Liaison Officer. He also leads Hampshire’s Extrication and Trauma efforts and has been a fixture at UK Rescue Organisation events.
Hampshire’s Lifesaver Recognised by Top Brass
Jerry, a dad-of-two from Crondall, has fought fires and answered calls across numerous Hampshire stations, including Lymington, Andover, and Basingstoke. His work also spans training and equipment development.
Chris Carter, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Authority Chairman, praised Jerry’s lifetime of service: “This award recognises a life spent in the service of others. It’s hard to imagine how many lives he has saved and people he has helped over 45 years.”
Chief Fire Officer Neil Odin added: “Hampshire firefighters hold a special place in the community because of people like Jerry. I’m thrilled he’s received this award, recognising his massive contribution to making Hampshire and beyond safer.”
