Fire Brigades Union Mourns the Loss of Beloved Member Helen Harrison
Helen Harrison was a powerhouse in the Fire Brigades Union and a fierce advocate for workers’ rights. Her passion and dedication left a mark on everyone she met.
From Firefighter to Union Leader
Helen started her firefighting career in Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service back in 1982. She climbed the ranks to become Group Manager before retiring in 2015. But it was her union work that truly defined her legacy.
Joining the FBU National Women’s Committee in 1999 as a representative for the West Midlands, Helen quickly earned a reputation as one of the most reliable and progressive voices in the union. Her peers trusted her so much, she was elected national Chair of the Women’s Section.
A Champion for Women in Fire & Rescue
Helen gave women in the Fire & Rescue Service a bold and respected platform. Her groundbreaking work on policies and workplace practices improved conditions for female firefighters across the UK. Her influence went far beyond her own region, creating lasting change nationwide.
Remembered for Her Spirit and Solidarity
Known for her sharp humour, unwavering support, and comradeship, Helen made the union and fire service better places. “She has left our union and our service a much better place,” said the FBU South West branch.
“We send our heartfelt solidarity and deepest condolences to her husband Ian, family, friends, comrades, and sisters at this very sad time.”
Helen Harrison’s passing is a huge loss, but her legacy will inspire firefighters and union members for years to come.
