Kent Romance Scammers Rake in £1.8 Million in One Year
Romance fraud has cost victims across Kent a staggering £1.8 million between August 2019 and August 2020. More than 180 cases were reported to Action Fraud, with just over half the victims being women.
But experts warn the real figure is much higher. Many fall silent, too ashamed to come forward.
The Lonely Victims of Online Love Scams
Scammers craft fake online romances, building trust over weeks or months. Once hooked, victims are asked for cash or personal info, leaving them heartbroken and out of pocket.
Detective Sergeant Marc Cananur from Kent Police’s Serious Economic Crime Unit said: “This crime destroys lives. These criminals exploit people searching for love to steal money and details. We urge anyone who suspects they’re being targeted to report it immediately. It helps us catch these heartless fraudsters.”
How to Spot a Romance Fraudster
- They push for chats via instant messaging or texts instead of the dating site.
- They ask lots about you but reveal little about themselves.
- They dodge basic questions about where they live or work.
- Profile pictures could be stolen from the internet—don’t trust them blindly.
Common Lies Used to Scam You
- Pretending to be overseas military needing cash for flights home or early discharge.
- Claiming urgent medical bills for themselves or family to get money.
- Promising a visit but demanding travel funds first.
Stay sharp, Kent – protect your heart and your wallet.
