Shops to Reopen Longer Hours as England Returns to Tiered Rules
From tomorrow, Wednesday 2nd December, England swings back to tiered COVID restrictions—and it’s great news for shoppers and retailers alike. All non-essential shops can reopen, plus trading hours will be extended by easing planning rules.
More Time to Shop Means Less Crowds and Safer Trips
This move isn’t just a business boost. It will ease pressure on public transport and help shoppers dodge peak hours, making social distancing much easier. Greater flexibility means a safer, more comfortable Christmas shopping experience.
Local Authorities Told to Cut Retail Curfews
Normally, councils limit shop opening hours through planning permission—often forcing stores to close by 7pm. Changing these restrictions is usually a slow process that can drag on for weeks.
But now, local planning authorities have been urged to be more lenient. They’re expected to back retailers who want to extend their hours and relax curfews wherever possible.
Communities Secretary Backs Flexible Festive Trading
“None of us enjoy navigating the crowds, especially now when social distancing is vital,” said Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick MP. “With these changes, your local shops can stay open longer, ensuring safer, less crowded shopping and easing strain on public transport.”
“How long shops stay open will be up to them and local councils. But councils should give hard-pressed businesses the maximum flexibility this festive season.”
COVID-Secure Shops to Offer Safer, Longer Browsing
Most retailers have already made their shops COVID-secure. Extending opening hours Monday to Saturday means a safer shopping spree through December and into the busy January sales.
If councils find shops skimping on COVID measures, they have the power to crack down and keep shoppers safe.
