Kirklees Child Sex Predators Sentenced After Shocking Abuse
Zahid Hassan, Saqib Raheel, and Sholan James have finally faced justice after a horrifying string of child sex offences exposed at Leeds Crown Court.
Gruesome Crimes Spanning Years
Following a nine-day trial and over eight hours of jury deliberation, the trio were convicted of abusing two vulnerable girls.
- In 2006, Hassan and an accomplice known as ‘Fred’ raped an 18-year-old girl.
- A few years later, Raheel, James, and a third man sexually abused a 15-year-old girl, with Raheel also raping her.
Yesterday, Judge Simon Phillips QC handed down brutal sentences:
- Zahid Hassan, 32, received 21 years in prison, to run alongside his existing 18-year term for multiple child rapes and abductions.
- Saqib Raheel, 34, was jailed for 10-and-a-half years for rape and sexual assault.
- Sholan James, 30, got six years for assault by penetration.
Victims’ Harrowing Testimonies
Prosecutor Kate Batty revealed how one victim was drugged with alcohol until “unable to talk, unable to stand,” before being raped while her abusers laughed. The second victim endured “humiliation and degradation” as Raheel boasted about his control, even recording the abuse.
The first victim spoke of living with “fear, stupidity, shame and anger,” struggling to trust men and feeling like a “burden” to her partner. She described the unbearable shame of being mocked after her assault and how the trauma affected her hopes of having children.
The second victim battles severe anxiety, binge-eating, suicidal thoughts, and difficulties holding down jobs – a lifelong scar from the abuse.
Judge Condemns “Insidious and Persistent” Grooming
Judge Simon Phillips QC said the abuse was deliberately targeted at vulnerable children, some so broken they returned to their abusers out of fear. He described the sentences as “severe” but necessary to deter others.
Addressing Hassan directly, the judge said, “You treated your victim with contempt, like a rag doll, using her in the most vile way possible.”
This case is the latest victory in West Yorkshire Police’s Operation Tendersea, a crackdown on historic child sexual exploitation in Kirklees. The message from the court is clear: predators will face harsh justice, no matter how long ago their crimes.
