Brutal Attack in Luton: Two Men Jailed for Rape and Assault

At around 12:30pm on Thursday 3 March 2020, officers answered a welfare call in Hockwell Ring, Luton. They found a woman in terrible distress, a victim of a savage attack. She had been raped, sexually assaulted, and beaten with objects including a table leg and vacuum cleaner pipe by two men.

Perpetrators Caught and Convicted

On Wednesday 17 February, Alyas Hussain, 41, of Newark Road, Luton, and Slamet Nazir, 38, of Cavendish Road, Luton, were both found guilty at Luton Crown Court. The jury convicted them of raping and assaulting the woman.

Judge Condemns ‘Appalling, Brutal Joint Attack’

“This was an appalling, brutal joint attack. Hussain showed an arrogant belief that the victim was expendable. Although less involved directly in the sexual assaults, his violence enabled them,” Her Honour Judge Gilbert said.

“The disrespect and contempt they had for this victim was clear.”

Hussain received 15 years’ imprisonment for rape, assault by penetration, and wounding with intent. Nazir also got 15 years and was placed on the Sex Offenders Register.

Police Praise Public, Encourage Reporting

Detective Sergeant Clare Gilbert, who led the investigation for Bedfordshire Police, described the attack as one of the worst she’s seen.

“If it wasn’t for the intervention of members of the public, the outcome would have been much worse,” she said.

“Thanks to those who reported the incident and provided strong evidence, the jury saw through the perpetrators’ lies.”

“We will always prosecute rape and sexual offences, reflected by the heavy sentences handed down here.”

Detective Inspector Michelle Lack urged victims to come forward:

“We will believe you and do everything to bring offenders to justice. Our specially trained officers work closely with expert partners to support survivors through the process.”
