Man Charged After Disturbing M27 Incident Sparks Fury

Police have charged Dean Williams, 28, after a tense incident on the M27 last Friday evening (August 27). The arrest has ignited a firestorm of public anger, with many urging authorities to prioritise mental health support over prosecution.

What Happened on the M27?

At around 3.30pm, emergency services were called to Botley Road bridge following reports raising concern for a man’s welfare. The incident led to the closure of the motorway between junctions 8 and 9 for several hours, causing serious disruption.

Following a thorough investigation, police charged Dean Williams, who has no fixed address, with causing danger to road users. He is due to appear at Portsmouth Magistrates Court on Tuesday, August 31.

Public Outcry: ‘He Needs Help, Not A Charge’

Social media erupted with nearly a thousand comments condemning the police decision. Many believe Williams was struggling with severe mental health issues and deserved support, not prosecution.

“Wow.. someone is desperate enough to think of taking their own life and you charge him!!!!!! Shame.. he needs help not conviction…. disgusted isn’t the word…”

“So he’s being punished for possibly trying to kill himself as if he wasn’t at the darkest, the lowest point in his life possible, some clever clogs thought it be even better to arrest him. Sorry but if this is what’s happening then it’s totally bang out of order.”

“Are you for real? This man sounds desperate. I’m sure that you naming him on social media has helped him enormously. Great.”

“Wow, this is so so wrong even if he had no intention of taking his life he obviously has mental health issues so needs help not being charged and taken to court!!”

Calls for Change in Handling Mental Health Crises

The incident highlights ongoing concerns over how mental health emergencies are managed by police forces. Campaigners and the public alike are urging authorities to rethink charging vulnerable individuals and instead offer dedicated mental health intervention and support.
