Scam Alert: Fake Cop Targets Pensioners for Big Cash
Police are cracking down after a brazen scam ripped off elderly victims in Bolton. Over ten days in April, five separate incidents were reported involving a man pretending to be a Greater Manchester police detective. Detectives fear more victims could be out there.
The Scam Uncovered
The conman calls from a withheld number, claiming he’s investigating bank fraud. He convinces pensioners to withdraw thousands of pounds, telling them a colleague will collect the cash. Amounts taken so far range from £2,000 up to a staggering £70,000.
So far, victims hail from Little Lever, Horwich, and Westhoughton, typically in their 70s and 80s. In two cases, the crook bagged over £6,000. Witnesses describe him wearing tracksuit bottoms and a hoody.
One Man Behind the Crime Spree
Police suspect a single offender targeting vulnerable locals with this ruthless ploy. They’re hunting for more possible victims and urge anyone with info to come forward. Officers are also working to get a clear description of the young man from those affected.
Detective Chief Inspector Dean Purtill said: “Impersonating a police officer is illegal, but using it to scam innocent people is despicable. We’re pursuing every lead to catch this fraudster.
“No real officer would ever ask you to withdraw money randomly. If you get a call like this, always ask for ID and ring 101 to check — or 999 in an emergency.”
