Teen Terror Arrests Spike in Essex and London
18-Year-Old Nabbed for Encouraging Terrorism
An 18-year-old man was arrested at an Essex address on Wednesday, 18 May, on suspicion of encouraging terrorism under the Terrorism Act 2006.
Initially detained under PACE, he was re-arrested under terrorism powers the next day. Westminster Magistrates’ Court granted detectives an extension to hold him until Wednesday, 25 May. He remains in custody at a London police station as inquiries continue.
17-Year-Old Girl Arrested in Related Probe
The following day, a 17-year-old girl was arrested in east London in connection with the same investigation. Held under section 41 of the Terrorism Act 2000, she is also in police custody in London.
Police Warn of Rising Youth Radicalisation
The investigation centres on alleged offences linked to extreme Islamist ideology.
Commander Richard Smith, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “We have seen three teenagers arrested this week by Met officers for terrorism offences, albeit as part of separate investigations. This is a worrying sign of a rise in police action against young people for terrorism-related matters.”
“Police nationwide work tirelessly to prevent radicalisation and act swiftly when offences are suspected.”
“We rely on the public. If you see or hear something suspicious, trust your instincts and report it immediately.”
