Hero Cop Simon Nelson Honoured in Platinum Jubilee Awards

Superintendent Simon Nelson, disability lead for the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA), has been handed a prestigious honour for his tireless work supporting disabled officers across the UK.

From Cancer Survivor to Champion for Disabled Officers

Diagnosed with stomach cancer in 2004, Simon faced a full stomach removal in 2006. Yet, he’s not just survived—he’s thrived. Simon continues to serve as a firearms and public order commander with Sussex Police, handling some of the force’s toughest roles despite his health battles.

“I am both astounded and thrilled to receive this honour, especially during Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee,” said Simon. “I used to have little faith in the future, but it now feels brighter than ever, especially in my final year of policing.”

A National Voice For Disabled Police

As president of the National Disabled Police Association, Simon fights hard for disabled officers and staff, championing equality, diversity, and inclusion. His advocacy covers not only physical health challenges but also neurodiversity, influencing policies nationwide.

He also volunteers on the advisory board for Cancer Central UK, a key charity helping people affected by cancer find support and information.

High Praise from Police Leaders

Chief Constable Jo Shiner hailed Simon’s dedication:

“I am absolutely delighted for Simon and very proud of him. His story is an inspiration – how to overcome life’s challenges and use that to be a force for good for others. We are extremely proud of Simon’s accomplishments.”

PSA President Paul Fotheringham added:

“Simon is a deserving recipient of this prestigious award. Despite his own health issues, he has dedicated himself as a senior officer and ambassador for disabled colleagues. Since he took on his PSA role, the number of disabled members has tripled, showing the huge impact he’s had.”

Simon has also shaped key national debates on police fitness testing, performance standards, dismissal rules, and tackling disability discrimination—paving the way for a fairer service tomorrow.

With Simon Nelson leading the charge, disabled officers get the recognition, support, and respect they deserve.
