Kent Police Shines Spotlight on Unsung Heroes of Response Policing Week

Response Policing Week is underway, celebrating the frontline officers and staff who rush to the public’s aid. These unsung heroes deal with everything from murders to burglaries, often being the first on the scene.

Response Officers: Jack and Master of All Trades

Neil, a Kent Police response supervisor, says response teams don’t always get the recognition they deserve. “There are loads of fantastic departments, but Response is sometimes under-recognised,” he told us.

“No matter the case — murder, robbery, burglary — it all starts with a response officer. They have to be a jack of all trades and master of them all.” Having worked as a response supervisor, Neil is eager to hit the streets this week and experience the hustle firsthand.

Fast-Paced, Unpredictable, and Vital

“It’s a really important and multi-faceted role,” Neil adds. “Unlike other policing areas where you focus on one speciality, response officers face the unknown every shift. A call may look straightforward but can turn into anything. It’s fast, sometimes dangerous, and hugely critical to the force’s success.”

Support and Recognition From the Top

Andy Marsh, CEO of the College of Policing, stresses the importance of looking after these frontline stars. “Response is at the heart of policing’s crime-fighting mission. Officers who face danger day and night must be supported.”

This week also highlights new wellbeing resources and practical tools designed specifically for response teams. “We’ve developed tailored learning and leadership materials so those in the toughest roles get the support they deserve,” Marsh confirmed.
