London Gangs Busted in Massive County Lines Crackdown

The Met Police have smashed county lines drug networks terrorising London communities in a week-long blitz from 27 February to 5 March.

Vulnerable Kids Trapped in Brutal Drug Rings

Offenders prey on vulnerable children, exploiting them as pawns in deadly drug supply chains. These kids are trapped in dangerous bondage, forced to hold and distribute drugs under threat of violence.

“Those involved use weapons and serious violence including kidnaps to intimidate and threaten victims,” police warned.

Drug Rings Fuel Crime Wave Across the Capital

County lines gangs exploit the vulnerable to feed Class A drug addictions, sparking a spike in anti-social behaviour, burglary, and robbery. The social and economic fallout hits hard.

“County Lines networks also prey upon the vulnerable to fuel Class A drug addiction, which poses huge socio-economic consequences for communities; increasing anti-social behaviour & acquisitive crimes, including burglary and robbery,” police said.

Met Police On Offensive with Data-Driven Operations

The Met’s multi-agency approach is focusing on prevention, diversion, and relentless pursuit of county lines criminals.

Since November 2019, more than 1,800 county lines have been shut down, with over 3,300 offenders arrested. Operation Orochi alone led to the arrest of 1,100 line holders, with 88% charged and 94% convicted.

The taskforce has also charged 60 defendants with 86 modern slavery offences.

Building on this success, Operation Yamata launched in April 2022 targets the heart of drug networks tied to homicide and serious violence. Commissioner Mark Rowley expanded these efforts in October 2022 to bring ‘Precise Community Crime Fighting’ to London’s streets.

Experts Call for Vigilance to Protect Young People

James Simmonds-Read, National Prevention Programme Manager at the Children’s Society, said: “It’s crucial that professionals can identify when children have been exploited by criminals. We’re pleased many vulnerable people – including young people – have been spotted and supported.”

“Any child, in any community, can be groomed and exploited – even those entering adulthood.”

London’s fight against county lines is far from over, but with bold police action and community vigilance, there’s hope to break the deadly chains.
