UK Ramps Up Support to Rehouse Afghans from Bridging Hotels

Fresh Push to Move Afghans Out of Temporary Hotels

The UK government is boosting efforts to help Afghans resettled under the Afghan Citizens Resettlement Scheme (ACRS) and Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) move from costly bridging hotels into permanent homes. After 18 months living in temporary accommodation, Afghans will get extra support to secure settled housing and build a fresh life in Britain.

On-the-Ground Help in Hotels

To speed up this vital move, liaison officers, work coaches, council staff, and charities will be based inside the hotels. They’ll offer practical advice on renting privately, job hunting, and English language classes. Clear translated guides and a helpline will also be available to make the transition smoother for thousands.

Thousands Still Waiting for Permanent Homes

So far, around 9,000 Afghans have found settled accommodation, but 8,000 remain in 59 bridging hotels. The government warns the current hotel costs are sky-high – around £1 million a day – making permanent housing not only better for Afghans but also for taxpayers.

Phased Move with Clear Notices

Starting April, Afghans in bridging accommodation will receive guidance on next steps and support options. By the end of April, they’ll be informed when their hotel stay ends, with a staggered three-month notice period to avoid a housing crunch.

The government stresses its commitment to helping Afghans make the UK their home long-term, encouraging communities to get involved through job offers or integration support. Future arrivals will bypass bridging hotels entirely, going straight to suitable permanent homes.
