Kate and Gerry McCann remarked on the official Find Madeleine Campaign website, “Today marks the 16th anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction.” Still missing… still sorely missed.
“It’s difficult to put into words how we feel.
“The police investigation is ongoing, and we are hoping for a breakthrough.” Thank you to everyone for your aid – it is really appreciated.”
The couple from Rothley, Leicestershire, also shared Clare Pollard’s poem The Contradiction, which they said resonated powerfully with them as they celebrated their anniversary.
As the formal suspect declared, Madeleine McCann’s parents have not “given up hope.
“The absence contradicts itself: the missing conjures what we miss,” says one line of the poem.
“I can’t hold you, but I do: please let me hold you in my head, and hold me where you are now.”
Madeleine was three years old when she vanished from a vacation apartment in Praia da Luz, Portugal, on May 3, 2007.
The McCanns’ statement comes two weeks after a German court opted not to hear a sex crimes prosecution against a man who is a suspect in Madeleine’s disappearance.
Prosecutors in the northern city of Braunschweig prosecuted Christian Brueckner in October in three distinct cases involving alleged sexual assaults perpetrated in Portugal between 2000 and 2017.
The court declined to consider the complaint since the locality in question was not Bruckner’s last residence in Germany.
Brueckner, who has purportedly denied any role in Madeleine’s disappearance, was named by Portuguese authorities as a murder suspect in the McCann investigation in June 2020.
