Armed Gunmen Blaze Shots at Busy Brussels Metro – Police Hunt Duo
Belgian cops are on the hunt for two heavily armed men who fired warning shots outside Clémenceau metro station in central Brussels at dawn. CCTV shows two masked figures wielding what look like Kalashnikov rifles near the station entrance just after 6am local time.
Chaos at Clémenceau Station
The gunfire sparked major disruption across Brussels’ transport network during rush hour. Metro lines 2 and 6, plus tram lines 4 and 10, were partially shut down by the Brussels Intercommunal Transport Company (STIB) while cops launched their investigation. The nearby Midi train station was also closed temporarily as a safety precaution.
Police Response and Investigation Underway
A police spokesperson confirmed shots were fired “around 7:00 a.m. local time” but said they were warning shots, not aimed at people. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported. “This is not being treated as a terrorist incident,” the spokesperson added. Surveillance videos reveal the suspects fleeing either through metro tunnels or by hopping a train.
Heightened Security and Public Warning
Authorities have set up a command post in Anderlecht close to the shooting site. Security perimeters are in place to preserve evidence and keep the public safe. Commuters should stay alert and check transport updates for possible delays.
Spike in Brussels Violence Alarms Locals
The metro shooting adds to a worrying streak of violence in Brussels. Just months earlier in June 2024, a shooting near Brussels-Midi left two dead and three hurt. In September 2024, another shooting near Clémenceau saw bullet holes in a nearby house but no injuries.
Locals are rattled by the recent unrest. Police urge anyone with tips to come forward and help crack the case as they work to boost security in the area.
