HGV Blaze Sparks Chaos as Snow Strands Drivers

The M4 near Slough is in lockdown after a lorry carrying hay burst into flames, causing gridlock and lengthy delays for commuters. Snow and icy conditions add to the misery, leaving cars abandoned and roads closed across the UK.

Hay Lorry Blaze Blocks M4 Westbound

Emergency services rushed to the scene between Junction 6 (Slough) and Junctions 8/9 (Maidenhead) as smoke billowed over the motorway. Firefighters battled the blaze using breathing apparatus and hose reels, focusing on damping down the hay load to prevent re-ignition.

“The M4 in Berkshire is closed westbound between J6 and J8/9 due to an HGV fire,” confirmed National Highways. “The HGV was carrying hay so fire crews will need to dampen down the load to ensure it does not re-ignite.”

Traffic has come to a standstill westbound with drivers urged to avoid the route or prepare for major delays. A diversion is in place following the hollow square symbol: exit at J6, take the A355 southbound, then A332, the A308 towards Maidenhead, and rejoin M4 westbound at Holyport Interchange.

Snow Chaos Hits Northern Roads

The disruption comes amid heavy snow and plunging temperatures nationwide. Northern England has seen drivers abandoning vehicles as roads become impassable. Villages are cut off as snow piles up and ice spreads.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning for snow plus multiple yellow warnings for ice across the UK. Temperatures are forecast to hit a bone-chilling -11°C overnight.

“Travel could be disrupted and there is increased risk of injuries on the ice,” said the Met Office.

M25 Collision Adds to Rush Hour Headaches

Further misery for commuters as two lanes on the M25 were closed following a collision, triggering seven-mile queues and delays of up to 90 minutes.

Motorists are warned to expect more travel chaos tonight as freezing conditions tighten their grip.

Fire Crews on High Alert

Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue said crews from Slough, Maidenhead, Windsor, and Bracknell are still at the blazing HGV. Efforts continue to fully extinguish the fire and clear the scene.

National Highways is assisting with traffic management and deploying a grab lorry to remove barrels from the trailer to prevent the fire spreading.

Drivers are urged to stay clear and plan alternative routes.
