19-Year-Old Nabbed After Burglary Probe

A 19-year-old man has been locked up for 18 months after pleading guilty to burglary and carrying a knife. Jamal Chery, from Cantaloupe Mews, East Grinstead, was caught after a break-in at Fountains Close, Crawley, on 2 March 2024 sparked a police hunt.

From Suspect to Convict

  • Chery voluntarily gave a statement on 29 January 2024 during the investigation.
  • He faced burglary, theft, and fraud charges at Crawley Magistrates’ Court on 1 October and was released on bail.
  • Just nine days later, officers spotted him acting suspiciously in Queens Square, Crawley.
  • He ran from a stop-and-search and was caught with a knife blade.

Behind Bars for Knife Crime and Burglary

Chery appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court on 13 October and was charged again, then remanded in custody. On 31 October, he pleaded guilty at Lewes Crown Court to all offences.

The court sentenced him to 18 months in prison: one year for burglary and fraud, and six months for carrying a knife in public.
