London’s buses are coming to a grinding halt this Christmas Day! Transport for London (TfL) has announced a total shutdown of all bus services across the capital on December 25. The festive period will see major timetable shake-ups across the network, so Londoners better plan their journeys carefully.

Festive Bus Schedules: The Lowdown

  • Christmas Eve (Dec 24): Buses run a Saturday timetable. The usually weekday-only SL6 gets a special festive service.
  • Christmas Day (Dec 25): No buses at all – total freeze on services.
  • Boxing Day (Dec 26): Sunday timetable in effect. But routes 969 and SL6 remain out of action.
  • Dec 27: Back to Saturday timetables.
  • Dec 28: Sunday timetable returns.
  • Dec 29–30: Saturday timetable again. Route 969 returns to normal Tuesday service on Dec 30. SL6 keeps special scheduling.

Night buses are also off over Christmas, with all 24-hour routes shutting around midnight. Normal services kick back in from January 2.

New Year’s Eve: Bus Services Hit by Road Closures

On New Year’s Eve, TfL runs a Saturday timetable with the SL6 special service. Night and 24-hour buses operate altered schedules. But beware – many central London routes will shut early from 6pm due to heavy road closures for the city’s NYE parties. TfL will share full details closer to the big night.

New Year’s Day (Jan 1): Sunday timetables will be in place across all services.

Big, Green, and Accessible: London’s Bus Network

TfL’s bus empire spans over 700 routes with more than 9,000 vehicles. Flat fares of just £1.75 include unlimited rides within an hour thanks to the handy Hopper fare. Plus, every bus is wheelchair accessible – accessibility is key.

And it’s not just red buses – TfL is charging ahead with electric and hybrid options, aiming for a zero-emission fleet by 2034 to keep London clean and green.

Why the Festive Freeze?

Lower passenger numbers over Christmas give TfL a chance to carry out essential maintenance and engineering work. So, don’t get caught out this holiday season – check those schedules and plan ahead before you head out.
