Wife Killer Locked Up for Life After Savage Stabbing
A man has been handed a life sentence after brutally murdering his wife as she tried to break free from their marriage.
Life Lock-Up: Killer to Serve Nearly 24 Years
Thisara Weragalage, 38, from Pentwyn, admitted killing his 32-year-old wife, Nirodha Niwunhella. Cardiff Crown Court sentenced him on February 20. He will serve a minimum of 23 years and nine months behind bars. Initially denying the murder, Weragalage changed his plea last January, sealing his grim fate.
Family Pays Heartbreaking Tribute to Nirodha
Nirodha’s family described her as a beloved daughter and friend, full of kindness and warmth.
“We remember Nirodha as a cherished daughter, family member and dear friend to many. She touched many lives with her kindness and warmth, and her memory will continue to inspire us. Though her life ended too soon, the love she shared will always remain with us. Rest in peace, angel.”
Father’s Emotional Court Statement
“My only daughter was a happy, mischievous girl who captivated everyone’s hearts. She loved her parents dearly and was a sweet soul who adored animals. The pain we felt when told she was murdered on August 21 is indescribable. Our hopes were shattered, and the mental burden unbearable. Communication struggles and financial hardship made it worse as the crime happened abroad. Most painful is that the killer was her husband, someone we also loved. We can’t understand how he did something so horrific.”
Knife Attack Shocks Cardiff Neighbours
Police were called to South Morgan Place, Riverside, Cardiff at 7:37am on August 21. They found Nirodha stabbed more than 20 times, with a broken knife at the scene. Despite urgent first aid, she died instantly.
Witnesses saw Weragalage fleeing in a Ford Fiesta. CCTV confirmed his involvement. He was arrested within an hour at Seawall Road, with blood stains inside his car.
Detective Brands Killer ‘Jealous and Cowardly’
“Nirodha was loved by family and friends. Her life was ended by a jealous and cowardly ex-partner who couldn’t accept their split. He brought knives to intimidate her — then murdered her,” said Detective Inspector Graham Williams. “He owned up, sparing the family a trial. No sentence can bring her back, but this hopefully offers some peace. This verdict is thanks to relentless police work and community support. We will never tolerate violence against women and will hold offenders fully accountable.”
