One man was tragically declared dead at the scene, while another remains in critical condition in hospital. A third man escaped before firefighters arrived but was also taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

A spokesperson from London Fire Brigade said: “The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Brigade and Metropolitan Police.”

Attempts to get further comment from the Metropolitan Police are ongoing.

London Ambulance Service detailed their response:

“We were called at 1.34am on 23 February reporting a fire in Duppas Hill Terrace, Croydon. Ambulance crews, paramedics, an incident response officer, our Hazardous Area Response Team, and a trauma team from London’s Air Ambulance were sent to the scene. We treated three people: one sadly died at the scene, and two were rushed to hospital as a priority.”
