A notorious people smuggler has been slammed behind bars after migrants were caught fleeing a yacht that ran aground near a Sussex beach.
People Smuggler Ali Omar Karim Jailed for Over Eight Years
Ali Omar Karim, 47, received a hefty sentence of eight years and seven months at Maidstone Crown Court on Wednesday. He pled guilty to multiple people smuggling offences linked to a sprawling criminal network.
Yacht Grounding Sparks Dramatic Migrant Escape
- A yacht ran aground near Rye, East Sussex, triggering chaos.
- CCTV caught migrants jumping ship, swimming ashore, or fleeing inland by dinghy.
- Within two hours, Border Force officers caught 14 migrants – including children – from Iran, Iraq, and Albania.
How Karim Ran a Ruthless Smuggling Empire
The National Crime Agency (NCA) investigation peeled back the layers of Karim’s organised crime ring operating between northern Europe and the Middle East.
- He coordinated migrant transport via small boats, yachts, lorries, and even commercial flights.
- Texts from Karim’s phone revealed migrants paid £800-£1,000 to get into the EU, plus more for UK transfers.
- In 2022, he charged around £1,650 per head for lorry crossings.
- One haul caught two Iraqis stashed inside a lorry trailer in Calais.
- Karim also forged visas to sneak people onto planes.
The Portsmouth man was arrested in March 2024 and admitted his crimes by June.
NCA Chief Condemns Smuggling Kingpin
“Karim was high up in the chain of command, deciding routes, crossing days and prices,” said Rachel Bramley, NCA branch commander. “This case is the result of a long-running investigation alongside UK and international agencies.”
The NCA confirmed that cracking down on organised immigration crime remains a top priority to stop dangerous illegal crossings and dismantle ruthless criminals.
