Antonia Bettridge Arrested in Dubai on Serious Narcotics Suspicion

Antonia Bettridge, 25, from St Helens, Merseyside, is caught up in a nightmare after being arrested in Dubai last month on suspicion of “possession of narcotics with intent to promote.” The grim prospect? She could be staring down life behind bars in the UAE.

From Liverpool Court to Dubai Detention

Bettridge moved to Dubai in November 2023, just months after a previous brush with the law in Liverpool Crown Court. There, she was convicted in September 2023 for possession of criminal property after police found £8,000 in cash during a stop on the M62 near Warrington.

Formerly a sports coach, she had since transitioned to real estate and was training to become a personal trainer in Dubai. Now, her freedom is on the line under harsh UAE drug laws that don’t require proof of intent to sell or promote for charges to stick.

Family Pleads for Help as Regional Tensions Rise

Bettridge’s mum, who hasn’t been named publicly, spoke out: “Antonia’s whole life revolves around fitness and healthy living. She doesn’t live a party lifestyle. She moved to Dubai to build something positive. We are devastated and want clarity about what has happened.”

With ongoing Middle East instability, the family’s fears are amplified. Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, said:

“When there is regional instability or security incidents, families become even more concerned about loved ones in vulnerable positions. It’s crucial defendants can prepare their defence properly.”

UK Government Steps In Amid Rising Concerns

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed they are supporting Bettridge and maintaining contact with UAE authorities. The region’s escalating tensions have triggered flight disruptions and heightened alerts for British nationals living in Dubai and beyond.

Antonia’s family hopes she will secure bail to prepare her defence and avoid the severe consequences that come with a drug conviction in Dubai – including a hefty £45,000 fine and a potential life sentence.
