Good news for beach lovers! Plans are in motion to reopen the popular staircase at Birling Gap after it was shut for two months due to cliff falls. The damaged steps, which link the car park to the beach, suffered in the latest cliff collapse at the famous Sussex coastline spot.
Repair Works Underway After Safety Survey
Wealden District Council, who own the staircase and manages the foreshore for The Crown Estate, have finished a detailed survey. The council confirmed repairs will start soon, with structural parts being made before installation.
The installation process is expected to take several weeks, with hopes to welcome visitors back in time for the busy summer season.
Safety and Community in Focus
The council teamed up with the National Trust, HM Coastguard, and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution to ensure the staircase is safe not only for tourists but also for emergency services.
The stairs also play a vital role in environmental clean-ups and boosting local tourism, making their reopening crucial for the community.
Council Assures Public: Safety Comes First
“Birling Gap is a much-loved beauty spot in our district and an important visitor attraction both for local residents and for people travelling from across the country. We are working hard to ensure the site can reopen so people can enjoy visiting during the summer,” said Councillor Kelvin Williams, lead for Public Health and Asset Management at Wealden District Council.

“However, it is essential that the storm-damaged stairs are fully assessed and made structurally safe before they can be brought back into use.”
The staircase will reopen once all repair work is completed and officially approved, giving holidaymakers the safe access they’ve been waiting for.
