A convicted sex offender from Canterbury has been locked up after cops uncovered thousands of vile child abuse images on his gadgets.
Police Raid Uncovers Shocking Evidence
In July 2024, officers paid a visit to Richard Mumford, 40, who lives in St Mary’s Gardens and is on the Sex Offenders Register. Kent Police had been keeping tabs on him as part of routine checks.
During the search, detectives found indecent images of children spread across multiple electronic devices. Mumford even tried to scrub his internet history clean, but it was no use.
Horror Findings: Over 7,000 Illegal Images, Including the Worst Category
He was hit with 16 charges, including making and possessing indecent images of children, plus possession of bladed weapons, after cops found two swords at his home.
The police graded a staggering 7,193 indecent and prohibited images. Horrifyingly, some featured victims as young as three years old. Over 1,350 were classified in the most serious category.
Mumford Sentenced to 28 Months
On 4 September 2025, Mumford pleaded guilty to all charges at Margate Magistrates’ Court. Then on 18 March 2026 at Canterbury Crown Court, he was handed a 28-month prison sentence.
“Mumford’s actions were not only criminal but deeply disturbing. The staggering volume of indecent material uncovered reflects a sustained and deliberate exploitation of children,” said Detective Sergeant Heidi Collins.
“Thanks to the tireless work of our investigators, he will spend time behind bars, where he can no longer prey on the most vulnerable in society. Kent Police will relentlessly pursue those who commit such appalling offences, and we will do everything in our power to protect children from harm.”
