A convicted sex offender from Canterbury has been jailed after police uncovered thousands of shocking child abuse images on his devices.
Police Raid Uncovers Appalling Evidence
In July 2024, Kent Police raided the home of 40-year-old Richard Mumford, a registered sex offender living in St Mary’s Gardens. The visit was part of routine monitoring, but officers quickly found a horrifying stash of indecent images on multiple gadgets.
Mumford tried to cover his tracks by deleting his internet history, but detectives were not fooled.
Over 7,000 Disturbing Images Found, Including Most Serious Category
Authorities charged Mumford with 16 offences, including making and possessing indecent images of children. They also seized two swords from his home, adding possession of bladed weapons to the charges.
A staggering 7,193 indecent images were discovered, some showing children as young as three years old. Disturbingly, over 1,350 of these were in the most serious category.
Mumford Sentenced to 28 Months Behind Bars
Mumford admitted all charges on 4 September 2025 at Margate Magistrates’ Court. On 18 March 2026, Canterbury Crown Court sentenced him to 28 months in prison.
“Mumford’s actions were not only criminal but deeply disturbing. The staggering volume of indecent material uncovered reflects a sustained and deliberate exploitation of children,” said Detective Sergeant Heidi Collins.
“Thanks to the tireless work of our investigators, he will spend time behind bars, where he can no longer prey on the most vulnerable in society. Kent Police will relentlessly pursue those who commit such appalling offences, and we will do everything in our power to protect children from harm.”
