A man has been locked up after a shocking road rage attack near a Tunbridge Wells golf club. David Fowkes, 61, threw a punch that seriously injured a pedestrian following a petty driving spat.

Golf Walk Turns Violent on Bayham Road

On the evening of 16 June 2023, a golfer was walking along Bayham Road after a round with friends. Without a pavement to walk on, he stuck to the right-hand side. Fowkes, driving a Vauxhall Corsa, approached but didn’t leave enough space.

The victim called out about Fowkes’ reckless driving, sparking a heated verbal row. Things quickly turned nasty as Fowkes got out of his car and delivered a savage punch. The victim fell backwards, hitting his head and sustaining serious injuries.

Justice Served: Jail and Restraining Order for Fowkes

Emergency services rushed the victim to a London hospital for treatment. Police arrested Fowkes at the scene and charged him with grievous bodily harm without intent.

At Maidstone Crown Court, Fowkes pleaded guilty. He was sentenced to one year and ten months behind bars on Friday 13 March 2026. A 10-year restraining order was slapped on him, banning any contact with the victim.

Police Warn Drivers: Keep Calm, Stay Safe

“Fowkes’ reaction was entirely disproportionate following a trivial disagreement about the highway code, which nearly cost the victim his life,” said Detective Constable Chris Welham.

“The judge’s immediate custodial sentence and lengthy restraining order should offer some comfort to the victim and his family after such a traumatic ordeal.”

“This case is a warning to all drivers: stay responsible and keep your cool behind the wheel.”
