Man Jailed for Life After Random Street Murder in Leicester
A man has been locked up for life after brutally murdering a woman he randomly attacked on a Leicester street. The shocking attack came moments after he crashed his car while high on cannabis.
Chilling Details of the Attack
Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, 24, was sentenced to a minimum of 21 years and six months for murdering 56-year-old Nila Patel on Infirmary Road. The horrifying incident unfolded on the afternoon of Tuesday, 24 June last year.
Leicestershire Police revealed Ahanonu had been driving erratically minutes before the attack, swerving across lanes and heading towards a bus stop where passengers waited. He then crashed his car in the city centre.
Ms Patel had just got off a nearby bus and was walking home when the unprovoked assault took place. Emergency services rushed to the scene, but tragically, she died from her injuries.
Family Pay Heartbreaking Tribute
“Our mum was not just a name in this case. She was a loving mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, and the heart of our family. She was our best friend and our biggest supporter,” her children said.
“Since the day she was taken from us, our lives have been changed forever. We are still trying to process the shock and trauma of losing mum in such a sudden and violent way.”
“We will carry mum’s love, her guidance, her kindness and the memory of who she was with us every day for the rest of our lives and we will never stop wishing the world could have had more of her in it.”
Community in Shock as Killer is Sentenced
Police described the murder as a random act that has deeply affected the local community. Ahanonu, found guilty of murder, must serve at least two decades behind bars before he can even apply for parole.
This devastating case serves as a stark warning about the dangers of drug-impaired driving and random violence on our streets.
