Norwegian Cruise Line has shaken up its birthday celebrations at sea, swapping out traditional cakes for a keepsake photo package. The new perk, launched on March 26, 2026, has cruisers buzzing – and many say it’s a far better way to mark the big day.
Goodbye Cake, Hello Memory Frame
Norwegian’s revamped Happy Birthday Cabin Decoration package no longer includes the usual six-inch birthday cake. Instead, guests receive a stylish Compass Collection photo frame and a high-quality photograph to treasure long after their trip.
“This package has been refreshed as part of our continued effort to elevate the way we celebrate life’s moments at sea,” Norwegian Cruise Line wrote to guests. “Moving forward, the cake will be replaced with a photo keepsake so you can take home a memory that lasts long after the candles are blown out.”
The switch likely helps reduce food waste and avoids the headache of storing cakes in small cabinets. Birthday decor and a celebration banner remain part of the package.
Cake Fans Still Have Options
Don’t panic if you’re set on a sugary celebration. Norwegian still offers half-sheet and full-sheet cakes in vanilla or chocolate, available for purchase and delivery straight to your stateroom.
The standard birthday package now costs $69 USD and should be booked at least three weeks before sailing. You can even send it to loved ones on board by providing their details.
How Does It Stack Up Against Other Cruise Lines?
- Carnival Cruise Line offers a $73.14 birthday package including decorations and a cake that serves six, with flavour choices like vanilla, chocolate, or red velvet.
- Royal Caribbean has two options: a basic room-decor package at $39.99 or a deluxe celebration with cake and strawberries for $69.99.
Norwegian’s keepsake photo makes its package stand out in a sea of cake options.
Cruisers’ Reactions: Love It or Leave It?
Social media is buzzing. Some cruisers welcome the change.
“We never ate the cake. You’re better off getting a slice at the Garden Cafe. The picture is an upgrade,” one Facebook user commented.
“We were always stuffed from eating all over the ship. That cake was the last thing we needed,” another added.
Still, some die-hard cake fans may feel disappointed, but with cake options still on the menu, Norwegian’s Got you covered.
