A brazen thief who snatched a family’s suitcase on their way to Gatwick Airport has been locked up. Ayoub Alshirredi, 31, was sentenced to 16 weeks behind bars after British Transport Police cracked the case.
Holiday Heist on the Rails
The family boarded a train from London Bridge to Gatwick on 27 October, placing their suitcase in the overhead rack. Alshirredi jumped on the same train and propped himself near their luggage as the train approached East Croydon.
As the train stopped, he grabbed the suitcase and bolted off before anyone noticed.
Quick CCTV Capture Leads to Arrest
The family only spotted the missing bag on arrival at Gatwick and immediately informed police. CCTV footage quickly revealed Alshirredi as the culprit. He was arrested two months later on 27 February but refused to answer questions during police interviews.
Police React: Theft Ruined Family Trip
“His actions were self-serving and opportunistic, targeting a young family going on holiday,” said PC Imogen Gates.
“He caused them needless anxiety and stress. Hopefully, the jail sentence brings them some closure.”
The British Transport Police urge anyone witnessing crime on the railway to report it by texting 61016.
