Man Jailed for Deliberate Gas Explosion That Shattered Derby Homes
A 58-year-old man has been locked up for 11 years after causing a devastating gas explosion in Derby. The blast, triggered by deliberately cutting a gas pipe, destroyed a terraced house and two neighbouring properties on Eden Street.
Terrified Rescue and Massive Damage
Paul Solway and his family dog were trapped in the rubble following the June 10, 2025 explosion. While the dog made a full recovery, Solway suffered severe burns and spent weeks in hospital. The blast damaged several other homes and vehicles nearby, forcing residents to evacuate for days amid an extensive multi-agency demolition operation.
Deliberate Act Confirmed by Police
Investigations revealed the explosion was no accident. Solway tampered with the gas main in the basement before igniting a kitchen chair, sparking the deadly blast. Although Solway claimed he had no memory of the event and denied wrongdoing, CCTV and forensic evidence told a different story.
Sentenced to 11 Years Behind Bars
At Derby Crown Court, Solway admitted six counts of property damage with reckless endangerment. With no fixed address, he was sentenced on April 8 to 11 years in prison, required to serve two-thirds before parole consideration. The devastating explosion has left a lasting scar on the close-knit Derby community.
