Drug Addict Jailed for Robbing Vulnerable Relative Four Times
Liam Oates has been slammed with a four-year prison sentence after repeatedly robbing a vulnerable family member to feed his drug habit. The 29-year-old didn’t just steal—he turned violent, threatening and even grabbing his relative by the throat.
Violent Robberies to Fund Drug Addiction
- On one occasion, Oates demanded £140, threatening violence over birthday money.
- On 4 May, he stole nearly £100 from the victim’s pension, warning he’d smash up their home if refused.
- He took another £100 over two days in May, again threatening to damage the property.
The terrified victim fled after the last robbery and called the police from a friend’s house. All the incidents happened at a home in Selston, Nottinghamshire.
Police Praise Victim’s Courage
“Robbery is a frightening and violent crime, but to target your own family is truly awful,” said Detective Sergeant Tom Carver from Nottinghamshire Police. “The victim showed incredible bravery in coming forward. I urge anyone suffering abuse to speak up. No one should live in fear.”
Oates, of Valentine Avenue, Selston, pleaded guilty to four counts of robbery and was sentenced today at Nottingham Crown Court on 23 October.
