Special forces stormed a Kyiv supermarket on Friday, fatally shooting a gunman who had taken multiple hostages. The brutal siege claimed six lives, including a woman who died from her injuries hours after the rescue operation.
Gunman Opens Fire, Takes Hostages
The incident unfolded in the Holosiivskyi district when a suspect entered the shopping centre and held several people captive. Police negotiators tried but failed to strike a deal, as the gunman continued firing at officers inside.
“Tactical teams stormed the building following unsuccessful attempts to make contact,” confirmed Interior Ministry chief Ihor Klymenko.
Video from the scene showed armed officers taking cover as gunfire erupted. The hostage crisis ended with a tactical assault that killed the assailant.
Death Toll Rises, Including a Child Injured
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko revealed the final casualty count rose to six, with a woman in her thirties dying in hospital at around 5:10pm. Earlier, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced five fatalities.

Authorities Investigate Motives and Security Lapses
Police have yet to release details about the gunman’s identity, motives, or any links to broader security threats facing Ukraine. The shopping mall remains cordoned off as forensic teams comb through evidence.
