Just after 11pm on 18 August 2024, PCs Nathan Maudsley and Kieran Ashworth raced to a knife attack scene in Gorton. They found chaos—multiple victims, a suspect still on site, and one man bleeding heavily from multiple stabbing wounds.
On-the-Spot Life-Saving First Aid
Without an ambulance on the scene and armed only with basic gear, the officers sprang into action. They detained the suspect, then worked tirelessly to stem the victim’s bleeding. For several critical minutes, they controlled the situation, calmed the badly injured man, and coordinated emergency services via radio.
Chief Constable Praises ‘Brilliant’ Team Effort
Greater Manchester Police credit PC Maudsley and PC Ashworth with directly saving the man’s life. In March 2026, both officers received Chief Constable Commendations for their bravery.
“It was very much a team effort. Teamwork was absolutely vital,” the officers said.
No bravado, no hesitation—just two officers doing tough, vital work and bringing a victim home to his family. This is response policing at its finest. Well done, PCs Maudsley and Ashworth. Truly brilliant.
