John Maddox, 83, from Farnham, has been sentenced to 21 years in prison after being found guilty of 20 counts of indecent assault involving seven children aged between eight and 15. The offences, which spanned over three decades from 1972 to 2004, were heard at Guildford Crown Court on 5 May.
Dance School Abuse
Maddox operated the Gardenia School of Dance and used his connections through the school and family relations to gain access to his victims. Many assaults happened at his home address, involving both boys and girls under his care.
Victims Speak Out
Several victims shared impact statements detailing the lifelong harm caused. One stated, “He was the adult. He was the teacher. Instead of protecting us, he abused the trust placed in him.” Another revealed how their love for dancing was tainted, and they now avoid dancing with male instructors.
Investigation Praise
Detective Sergeant Brendan Roberts led the inquiry, describing Maddox as a “sexual predator” who manipulated victims. Roberts praised the bravery of the victims for coming forward, ensuring Maddox was brought to justice.
